THE DUSY DEFINITION OF ADVENTURE

Aug 27, 2009

As a club we’ve have had a lot of great runs, a lot of good laughs and some big challenges to overcome but nothing could compare to our run to the Dusy. One definition of an “adventure” is “a bold, usually risky undertaking, hazardous action of uncertain outcome.”  I have stated that if this wasn’t the longest, most beautiful and most challenging trail in the U.S, it had to be close. I believe this to be true but add in some rain, 13 vehicles and mechanical problems and it can all add up to a real adventure that many would be unwilling to take. Another definition is “an exciting or very unusual experience.” We had Seth and Kevin along so either was possible. We knew this would be a real adventure we just didn’t know what kind. Thanks to our people, this experience despite its challenge’s, became an adventure of a life time.

We started the tail Saturday knowing there was a 20% chance of rain. This turned into 100% as we approached Thompson Hill and night fall came. This made a difficult section of the trail almost impassible. Slick rocks and mudd can challenge even the most capable rig. We were already committed and unwilling to give up. Did I mention that Kevin had already broken his front axle and was driving in three wheel drive. The definition of “challenge” is “difficulty in a job or undertaking that is stimulating to one engaged in it.” I wouldn’t use the word “job” when describing any part of off roading and I don’t like using the word “stimulating” with anything involving Ron, but this part trail was a real challenge. We managed to winch and fight our way up Thompson Hill and made it into the camp just above Thompson Lake. You would be surprised what a fire can do for your spirit when you are tired, wet and cold. We completed this most difficult section of the trail around 1:30 am. This was all made possible by the extra efforts of Ryan, Ken, Paul, John and my Warn winch. Joe became trail genius by bringing two canopies which saved us all from the rain. Most clubs wouldn’t be willing to take this challenge or would give up and turn around. Despite frayed nerves and snatchy attitudes I was quite proud of how all our members reacted to the situation. That was extreme rock crawling and I don’t think any of us would intentionally put ourselves in that situation again but I’m glad we conquered and overcame.

Sunday morning came a little too fast and the weather was just slightly better than the night before. The fog and rain didn’t make it any easier to see what I knew was beautiful scenery but none of us like dust, especially Ashleigh. Dust was not an issue for the remainder of the trip. We had decided after Saturdays challenges that we would take Sunday a bit easier. We were on the trail for about five hours and made camp at East Lake. This day was fairly uneventful. Who knew given the night before and the morning of this day, that our evening on East Lake would be so spectacular. The scenery and the atmosphere was so calm and peaceful that it can’t be described. Later that evening the sky completely cleared and the stars did as much to light our camp as the fire. It was 180 degree turn from the night before and a very welcome sight.

Monday morning was as perfect as the night before. Continuing down the trail the clear weather made for easy site seeing. It was nice to see the distant mountains, the sky and the terrain in front of you. I spotted some deer and was hopping to see some bears just so I could tell April that I had. She seemed to be especially nervous about the prospect of bears. We finally made it to Ershim Lake which was the original focus of the whole trail. There had to be something special about this place. People were so dedicated to getting to this lake that they made the effort to build this trail. This was great undertaking. We had to stop to see what the devotion was all about. This lake was as beautiful as the rest only bigger and known for its trout. Paul, Troy and I decided to try our hand at catching some fish. I can’t say that we were incredibly fortunate at fishing but we were incredible blessed by the experience. Outside of Ron yelling at his kids, which he’s really dedicated to, I couldn’t be more relaxed. I would have loved to stay on this lake for several days but it was Monday and we had to be back in San Diego by Tuesday. There was a lot more trail to run and time was short. Our plan was to camp at Lakecamp Lake but some guys from the Fresno club said we would be better off staying at Mallard Lake, the fishing was suppose to be better. You weren’t going to get argument from Troy and I, Mallard Lake it was. On our way to Mallard Lake it became obvious that April was really coming into her own, so we decided to give her an official off road license, she deserves it. Seth decided to shit talk to Ryan on the trail and managed to crash into a tree, we will probably be taking his license away. After the standard antics on the trail we finally reached Mallard Lake. As Ryan and others gathered wood for the evening fire, Troy and I made a beeline for the lake hoping to improve our dinner prospects. I had the biggest hit of the day. This sounds like the standard fishing story of the one that got away. Well it did! Troy actually landed his and we had enough for dinner and a good dinner it was. Trout doesn’t get any fresher than that. It was a perfect ending to a really great day

Tuesday we need to get an early start, we were miles from the end of the trail and almost four hundred miles from home. We weren’t on the trail for 30 minutes when Dave had his track bar fall off. Another fine installation by 4 Wheel Parts, not! After some trail repairs we made our way down to Lakecamp Lake. This is when Seth noticed that Steve didn’t have a plug in his diff cover. Ashleigh thought a tampon would make a great trail fix but this is why we don’t let the women fix the rigs. Steve was alright with it but I thought a wine cork would be a little more manly. Continuing down the trail, taking on several more hurdles we eventually made the end of the trail. Some were happy, some were sad, some were just amazed that they had made it. We had overcome some big challenges, some mechanical difficulties and some crazy weather. I’m sure if you asked each of the 13 members on the run you would get 13 different descriptions. No matter the words or definitions used to describe this event, I can explain it in one, “awesome!”

P.S. Seth thanks for all the help with the blog!

John Goncalves on Aug 29, 2009 9:49pm

I have to say "OUT-Freaking-STANDING"
Of the seven years I've been wheeling, this was the most amazing wheeling ever.
Sure, could have done without the winning and bitching, but hey it added to the adventure.
Ryan, Ken, Paul, and Jeff have to come along every trip for the rescues,
Troy for the fish,
Joe cause we want to be confy,
Paul and Dave cause us latinos have to stick together :-) viva la rasa,
Kevin so I can practice my wrenching skills,
Ron and April cause she has a YJ and YJs are cool,
Brit cause he's funny,
and Seth just in case we are feeling too good about ourselves, he can trash talk us to death.

April Baker on Aug 29, 2009 9:59pm

I had an amazing time and am so excited that I'm getting my "official" off road license. Do they come in pink??

I also want to say a HUGE thank you to the guys who stuck around and helped fix my jeep at 9 o'clock at night in beautiful downtown Delano, CA. Thanks to Seth, John, Joe, Paul, David, and Alex!!! Seth, I'm so glad we didn't get shot on the way to Kragen to buy a new ignition coil!!!

Kevin Lustina on Aug 30, 2009 8:25am

One of the best adventure i've been on!! after my front axle shaft broke, i gotta admit i was a bit pissed off at myself and the situation. but after i pulled myself together I tried my best to keep up with the group while keeping the remainder of my front axle somewhat in tact. Because really, the last thing i wanted to happen was to slow down the group and have everyone constantly waiting on me. had tons of fun and had some good laughs. I'd like to thank you all for making this event very memorabe!!

Special thanks to John for sticking around after the run eventhough i told him he didn't have to. We were alone out there and he helped yank my shaft and took pictures of it.

Settle down Ron, i'm talking about my AXLE shafts here.

Ken Steele on Aug 30, 2009 8:43am

What a great experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip. They say a tired dog is a happy dog. If that's true, then Cali must have had a terrific time as well. She slept for 2 days after the trip. I'm glad to see that everyone made it home safely. Thanks to everyone that came out, but a special thanks to Jeff for putting together the perfect trip; and to the Bakers for feeding me after I did such a poor job of packaging my own food. One question: when can we go back?

Ken Steele on Aug 30, 2009 8:45am

Oh yeah, I posted a bunch of pics on facebook and in my gallery here if you want to look at more pics.

Bo Burchell on Aug 30, 2009 1:33pm

i first wanna say . yeah so i am pretty jealous, but other than that it looks like you guys had a great time. wish i would have came on this one. there is always next time. from the looks of it i need to do some improving. well hope to see you next run

Joshua Parrish on Aug 31, 2009 6:57am

Well, i was driving downtown and broke my CJ. again... Imagine that...

I would have loved to be there. Maybe next time

Rhett Carter on Aug 31, 2009 12:58pm

wow i should have reenlisted just to make this run. well i guess seth gets the golden twig that took the spirit out of my jeep. haha good job man. i miss all of yall and hope that this club is still there when i make my way back out that way to take on what the 4x4corps throws at me.

p.s. i will be posting my tonka truck on here as soon as i get it done

Paul Newell on Aug 31, 2009 1:40pm

Great trip!! Could have done without the rain, for sure. But I guess its an experience I will never forget, especially seeing Kevins Jeep about to go over end over end, never thought a jeep could point skyward! To everybody in the crew thanks for the great time and memories. Viva la raza!!

Seth Biehslich on Aug 31, 2009 6:31pm

Had a great trip as well. And just to set the record straight I didn't pop "the best tires I've ever had" on a twig. I did bump into a tree but it didn't do any damage to my jeep. I'm really surprised that Jeff didn't post in the blog about his "cabin" policy that he stated to all members on the first night. Can't wait to do it again next year.

Seth Biehslich on Aug 31, 2009 6:35pm

So Kevin are you going to write a blog about John yanking your shaft while spending some quality alone time and taking pictures??? Remember this is a family website!!!

Ken Steele on Aug 31, 2009 7:17pm

"Cabin" policy? What the hell was that? I don't remember being briefed on any "cabin" policy. Maybe it was a good that I slept in my tent on Friday night.

And I definitely don't want to see any pics of John yanking Kevin's shaft.

Seth Biehslich on Aug 31, 2009 8:08pm

Ken if I remember correctly it was you that Jeff was telling " My Open Mouth" policy to.

Seth Biehslich on Aug 31, 2009 8:53pm

Looks like someone is using his power to change what people write. Huh Jeff!!!

Ken Steele on Aug 31, 2009 9:13pm

Now that's funny!

David Dominguez on Aug 31, 2009 11:29pm

Had a great time even though 4 wheel parts ruined my offroading spirits. I especially wanted to thank Ryan, Ken and John for helping me with not only my 4 wheel parts issues but having patience and helping me pick the right lines (you too Paul). You guys made the trip a whole lot easier. Thanks for letting us tag along, you all are a great bunch.

Ron Baker on Sep 1, 2009 3:31pm

It was the back door is always open policy I think

Ken Steele on Sep 1, 2009 3:42pm

Ahh yes, the "Jeff's back door is always open policy." How could I forget.

Brandi Wood on Sep 1, 2009 6:40pm

hey april i'd have tp say you look good in the pictures

Brittain Christie on Sep 1, 2009 8:08pm

I had a great time. I don't think I'll get to do anything like if for a long while since I'm going back east. I want to thank everyone that was involved in the Thompson Hill rescue team. Ken, Jeff, Ron, Joe thanks for all the spots along the trail as well. I also want to just remind everyone that "Thousands of people every year die in this spot" so beware for next year.

April Baker on Sep 2, 2009 6:00pm

Thanks Brandi! ;o)

Ryan Lentz on Sep 2, 2009 10:05pm

This was without a doubt the best trail I have ever done and with some of the best people! I just want to thank everyone for their help and effort to make this trip what it was, to quote John "OUT-FREAKING-STANDING"!

Adrian Thompson on Sep 3, 2009 7:57pm

dude i might have missed it but there is NO WAY i would have made it through that trail.

Seth Biehslich on Sep 4, 2009 9:36pm

There were trees everywhere!!!!!

Seth Biehslich on Sep 7, 2009 2:01pm

Awesome Video for an Awesome Trail

Paul Newell on Sep 8, 2009 10:21pm
