DOG DAYS OF BIG BEAR!

We've all heard of "The Dog Days of Summer." Our latest run to Big Bear was no dog but we had some crazy dog along for our run. Cali is a veteran trail dog and she knows the ropes, Sonnie on the other hand is the new boot to off roading and it showed. These two added a great deal of entertainment to our weekend run and with Ron and Seth missing the additional entertainment was welcome.

Our goal was to get some work done on our trails and to have some fun. We did both. We completely opened one of our four trails. This required the removal of some large trees and with Matt's mad skills we made easy work of these massive road blocks. This trail is 2N19C and it lead to a beautiful meadow and will be a perfect area for camping. Saturday on the trail ended with a run up to Craft's Peak. For the members who have not taken the opportunity to run this trail it offers some of the best views on the mountain and is an awesome club resource. We also took advantage of the north shore cabin. It's a little rustic but is perfect for large groups and it's free to members who take part in volunteer trail runs. The fire pit off the front porch will be great for club meetings, April just needs to find the gavel.

One of the highlights of our weekend was the time spent on deep creek. The weather was beautiful and the creek was a perfect way to relax. The dogs were in heaven. Matt usually provides the entertainment but in this case it was his dog Sonnie. He managed in five minutes to clear all the other people from our favorite spot. He started by peeing on a Coach purse then climbing on all the swimmers enjoying the water and shaking off on all others standing around. You would have thought a swarm of bees had come through, people screaming and running. It was reminiscent to April's first drive up Elliot Mine. It was one of the funniest exoduses of people I have ever seen. Although Melissa acted embarrassed she did nothing to stop him. There are advantages to bringing along a nutty dog!

We took a really good Sunday run across John Bull and enjoyed a very good hamburger in Fawn Skin. Although Cali and Sonnie managed to redefined "The Dog Days of Summer" they made The Dog Days of Big Bear a good thing.  If you're a member of the 4X4 Corps and you're missing this summers events you are missing out on a great deal of fun and the antics of the dogs!

I needed the extra storage space. When you put a family of 4 and a 70 lbs dog into a TJ there just isn't much room left over for beer and gear. Not all of us have a trail rated minivan, although the boss did tell me to go buy one. She really likes yours by the way. How charitable are you feeling Joe?

Ken, What is that huge box doing on the back of your rig? Is that for Cali's dog bones? Next you will be pulling a trailer.

Another great weekend. Thanks to everyone that came out. The cabin is spot on perfect with a kitchen, bathroom, plenty of floor space and a fire ring outside. And you can't beat the price. I had a great time. The wife and kids loved Deep Creek, Cali-not so much. I look forward to seeing everyone out there again soon.
