DOUBLING DOWN ON THE DUSY! Featured

DOUBLING DOWN ON THE DUSY!   I’d concluded after running the Dusy last year that this trail is in a class all its own. I described it as “Awesome.” After running this trail twice with the club and a third time without, my opinion remains the same. This trail is as good as it gets. This year we had fewer members and fewer Jeeps but the experience remained incredible. With better weather, more time and less drama this year’s trip to the Dusy could only be compared to being in Heaven. For the challenge, beauty and fun I can’t compare this trail  to any other. The Dusy doesn’t disappoint!   We started this year’s adventure with a visit to McKinley Grove. We had the time and we were waiting on Joe and Steve to make it up the mountain. For those who have run the Dusy before McKinley Grove is the area we pass going to Courtright reservoir. It is the patch of Giant Sequoias along Dinkey Creek Rd. There are 216 of these awe inspiring 2000 year old trees. With twenty foot diameters and hundreds of feet in height they are really something to see. Just for a little prospective, Jesus was walking the earth when these trees were seedlings and some of you call me old! I highly recommend a stop at McKinley Grove.  Travis and I made it to the trail head with plenty of day light and our four additional passengers. With additional days and…

REDNECK WHEELIN' REVIVAL!

REDNECK WHEELIN’ REVIVAL!   A revival is defined as the restoration of life, consciousness, vigor and strength. The 4x4 Corps returned to Corral Canyon this last Sunday for some fun. It was Ken Steele’s last run before deploying to Afghanistan and we had new members that wanted to run some trails. Let’s see, we had Josh, Justin, Jeff and Jesus as well as others and of course Ken, he just seemed to be in Heaven. This wasn’t just wheelin’ it was a redneck wheelin’ revival. What could go wrong we had Jesus with us and one of our token rednecks Justin. He is the only member of the club that I know of that has jumped his Jeep in “Dukes of Hazard” style and driven his Jeep in a crash up derby. At different times of course. These are just a couple of the things that certifies him as a redneck. Just remember “Redneck” in 4X4 Corps terms equals entertainment. The weather was perfect and life was good. The only thing missing was red Jeep Ryan. I have to refer to him that way because we also had blue Toyota Ryan with us. Anyway this wasn’t the first time he’s gone missing, so we rolled on without him. We had eleven rigs and some really good people to rock crawl with including one of our newest member, Josh Peterson. It’s always good to have new members especially ones with mad skills.   As an avid off roader I have my concerns…

Wheelin' and Weddings

WHEENIN’ AND WEDDINGS   What can I say, I love wheelin’ but weddings not so much. Don’t get me wrong I’m honored to be invited but as an outdoor guy I’m not big on the whole dress up and look good thing. Weddings were invented by women for women. I don’t know who invented receptions but I know why, it was to get the guys to show up. The reason I bring this up is I spent the last two weekends at weddings. Travis Armenta and Justin Bailey are both good friends and Corps members. Their new wives aren’t just average girls either. Travis’s wife Amy is a Marine and loves to off road. Justin’s wife Heather is a chainsaw artist and any girl that looks good working a chainsaw is alright with me. Now, I would have loved to say that the brides had incorporated a rock crawl into the ceremony but I wasn’t that lucky.           The weddings were both very nice and I was honored to take part but had they added a mud bog to the reception it would have been awesome. The good news was Justin and Heather’s wedding was in Big Bear. Anyone that runs with the club knows that if we’re in Big Bear we’re going to run trails. Let’s see… wedding and reception on Saturday and wheelin’ on Sunday,  this sounds like a deal to me. No, the newly weds didn’t take part but we did round up…

DOG DAYS OF BIG BEAR

DOG DAYS OF BIG BEAR! We've all heard of "The Dog Days of Summer." Our latest run to Big Bear was no dog but we had some crazy dog along for our run. Cali is a veteran trail dog and she knows the ropes, Sonnie on the other hand is the new boot to off roading and it showed. These two added a great deal of entertainment to our weekend run and with Ron and Seth missing the additional entertainment was welcome. Our goal was to get some work done on our trails and to have some fun. We did both. We completely opened one of our four trails. This required the removal of some large trees and with Matt's mad skills we made easy work of these massive road blocks. This trail is 2N19C and it lead to a beautiful meadow and will be a perfect area for camping. Saturday on the trail ended with a run up to Craft's Peak. For the members who have not taken the opportunity to run this trail it offers some of the best views on the mountain and is an awesome club resource. We also took advantage of the north shore cabin. It's a little rustic but is perfect for large groups and it's free to members who take part in volunteer trail runs. The fire pit off the front porch will be great for club meetings, April just needs to find the gavel. One of the highlights of our weekend was the time spent on deep creek.…
